Norfolk, Virginia Area
Virginia, it may be said, is the birthplace of the United States of
America. Home of the first permanent English settlements, it provided
not only many of our nation's earliest leaders, but also the land on
which our nation's capital resides.
Among its native sons are George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James
Madison, Stonewall Jackson, and Robert E. Lee. Each of these, in his own
way, fought for the freedoms we enjoy today. And in Virginia, you may
walk in their footsteps. Listen closely, and you may hear their voices.
No one can visit Virginia and leave untouched by the extraordinary
events that unfolded here.
Much of this history is preserved. Colonial Williamsburg provides the
truest glimpse into our ancestors' lives than possibly any other place
in the nation. Alexandria has been a major player in all of the nation's
wars. Charlottesville provided us with Thomas Jefferson, James Madison
and James Monroe.
Come to Virginia to visit. But don't be surprised if you decide to stay!
